Lesson Title: Intermolecular Forces 3

State Standards:
(GLEs/GSEs)
GSE - PS1 (9-11) - 4

National Standards:

Context of Lesson:
This will be the third class on intermolecular forces. The students will be working on the second half of the SAM activity.

Opportunities to Learn:
Depth of Knowledge:

  • Level 1
    • Label a molecules bases on what types of intermolecular forces it contains.
  • Level 2
    • Compare the strength of intermolecular forces to ionic and covalent bonds.
  • Level 3
    • Differentiate between the different intermolecular forces.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  • Bonding
  • Atomic Structure
  • Molecular geometry

Plans for Differentiating Instruction:
The SAM activity uses several ways of illustrating the topics so that all types of learners will be able to understand.

Accommodations and modifications:
The assessment for this concept will be the SAM activity which the students will do online and write answer to questions. I will adjust my grading rubric to help the students who are struggling. I will also be walking around and giving some hints to the students who need them.

Environmental factors:
The students will be sitting in their normal group seats.

Materials:

Objectives:

  • The students will evaluate the strength of intermolecular forces compared to the strength of ionic and covalent bonds.
  • The students will differentiate between the different intermolecular forces.
  • The students will label a molecules bases on what types of intermolecular forces it contains.

Instruction:
Opening:

  • Review yesterdays SAM activity.
    • What did you learn?
    • What was still unclear?
      • Correct misconceptions.
      • This is what I saw that many students had trouble with...

Engagement:

  • Pass out the laptops.
  • Tell the students to open the SAM activities and log in.
  • Work on Intermolecular Forces Day 1.
  • I will be going around the room helping if need be while I am asking the students questions.
  • When the students are done I will quickly go over the SAM activity with the students.

Closure:

  • Collect laptops.
  • Tomorrow we will be doing a lab on bond strength.
    • Pass out the lab sheets.
      • Model the lab for the students.

Assessment:
The students will be assessed through the SAM activity.

Reflections:
